Maintaining your home takes an effort. Staying vigilant and being proactive in making sure that your home is in the best possible shape is ideal. Even if you can’t do the heavy- lifting yourself, you have to be able to tell when the professional help is required before the small issue becomes a big issue.

The HVAC system is an aspect of your house that is very important in maintaining the ideal environment inside your home. That is reason enough to familiarize yourself with this.

In this article, you’ll get familiar with the HVAC system, and know what it means for your house. Let’s begin!

What is an HVAC System and What are its Uses?

HVAC is an abbreviation of the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning, and, The HVAC system in your home is the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning system in your house.

As the name suggests, the system’s goal is to keep your house (or any place else it is used, for example, factories, and other commercial settings) warm or cool, depending on the need of the space.

Your HVAC system is a network of systems that move the air from inside of your house to outside, and vice- versa.

The HVAC system not only maintains the warmness and coolness of your home environment, but it also improves the air quality of the space as well.

How does it Work?

The HVAC system is a setup to maintain the ideal environment inside your house. It does so by making use of various components in its design. These

Firstly, fresh air comes in from the outside, and the inside air goes out. The fresh air that comes in then goes to the air handling unit, where it is further processed. It is where the system filters the air and removes its contaminants. After all the dirt, dust, allergens, or all other impurities are out of the air, it moves on to the next phase.

In the next phase, the system applies or removes the heat, and the excess humidity is removed (or added), based on what the environment needs. Now finally, the clean, fresh, and rightly processed air enters the space through the network of ducts. You can enjoy the fresh air and feel the temperature adjusted to your liking, with the help of the HVAC system.

Now, let’s have a look at the various components that constitute the HVAC System.

Components of the HVAC System

  • The Return Duct

The return duct is a crucial part of your HVAC system. It performs several functions, an important one of which is maintaining the air pressure in the home. The return duct does this by removing the unprocessed air and puts it back through the system. This way, the processed air remains pure.

Return duct is an essential part of the system and hence requires proper maintenance. Any issue with the return duct can interfere with the whole mechanism. Without the return duct, the displacement of the air can be an issue.

  • The Exhaust Outlet

The heating system that is also an essential part of the HVAC system, creates exhaust that needs to be expelled. For this purpose, the exhaust outlet of the HVAC system is responsible. It helps in keeping the heating process running smoothly and creates a safe and complete heating system.

  • The Filter

As the name suggests, it is responsible for clearing out the impurities. The fresh air that you enjoy in your house is all thanks to the filtration process of your HVAC system.

There are various types of Filters available for your HVAC system, and they act in different ways to keep your HVAC system running. Some of these types are Pleated filters, Fiberglass Air Filters, Electrostatic Air Filters, HEPA Filters Washable Filters, etc.

  • The Ducts

Ducts are the veins in the body of the HVAC system, as they carry the air in and out. Ducts ensure that the air quality of your home is up to the mark, along with the thermal comfort.

You may also know this as the ductwork, and the process of planning out, sizing, detailing, optimizing, along with finding the pressure losses through a duct system, is called duct design.

  • The Outdoor Unit

The outdoor unit of your HVAC is the part that you can observe from the outside. It is apparent to you and is the front of the much more elaborate HVAC system.

This Outdoor unit contains the fan, which is responsible for providing the airflow. There are other elements to the outdoor unit as well.

  • The Compressor

A part of the outdoor unit of the HVAC System the compressor has as its function the conversion of refrigerant from gas to liquid. After the refrigerant converts into the liquid, it goes into the coils.

  • The Coils

The coils where the liquefied refrigerant comes is also a part of the outdoor unit. The function of these coils is to cool down the air that passes through them. It is possible with the help of the liquid refrigerant that passed there by the compressor.

  • The Blower Motor

The blower in the HVAC system is responsible for drawing in the warm air through the main section of the system. This warm air creates a comfortable environment inside your house when it’s cold.

  • Thermostat

The thermostat is responsible for sensing the need for your space, and it does so with the help of various sensors that are a part of it. Using these sensors to determine whether the heating and air conditioning need to be turned on or off.

Tips – Maintaining the HVAC System

To enjoy an uninterrupted fresh and comfortable airflow, you need to make sure that the HVAC system in your home is well- maintained. Here are a few tips to keep in mind.

  • Always make sure that the vents are clean, and there’s no mold infestation or any other such issue obstructing, and polluting the airflow.
  • Do timely checks to determine the air- quality. You can seek professional help for this.
  • Replace parts such as filters every few months to maintain the optimal level of performance.
  • Check for leaks and funny odors regularly. Clean and adjust the dampers annually as well.
